Sidwell's Senior Day ended up being a memorable one, with the seniors (and three underclassmen) stumbling a bit in the top of the first, surrendering two runs, before quickly evening the score in the bottom half of the frame.

The game went by quickly, with little scoring by either team in the middle section of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, GDS was holding a 3-2 lead before Zach Gayer led off with a single and stolen base. On the next pitch, Will Phillips reached first (and then second) on an error with Gayer scoring on the same play, evening the score with no outs. Nathan Carpenter-Holmes ripped an RBI triple to put the Quakers ahead by one. Later in the inning, Mihir Patel (more on him later) recorded a two-out RBI (which ended up being game-winning) to put the Quakers up 5-3 heading into the GDS 6th.

In the 6th, GDS managed to score a run on an RBI base-hit from their leadoff hitter, which brought their second hitter up with two outs and runners on second and third -- leaving pitcher Ethan Walker to face a GDS hitter who had homered in the first, followed by their third hitter, who had homered in the third. With no margin for error on a mistake, Walker pitched around the second batter, walking him in a seven-pitch at-bat, bringing GDS's best hitter to the plate with the bases loaded and the tying run at third base. On a 1-0 count, Walker induced a high fly ball to shallow center field, which Gayer camped under to end the inning.

The Quakers did not score in the bottom of the 6th, leaving Walker with a one-run lead to protect in the last inning. He struck out the first batter -- but then things got interesting, when the next two GDS batters reached on fielding errors, leaving runners on first and second with one out. The next batter grounded to short, and Will Phillips flipped to Eric Sun at second, who attempted a game-ending double play. His throw ended up being late and pulling Patel off of first base, with the runner from second having rounded third and headed for home. Patel pivoted a threw a bullet -- reminiscent of his throws to complete the Quaker triple play against St. Andrew's and a double play against Mercersburg, both from earlier this season - to Carpenter-Holmes who applied a firm game-ending tag, six feet up the line from home plate. The ensuing celebration was a terrific way to end an exciting senior day.
