The Quakers of Sidwell Friends took on the Little Hoyas of Georgetown Prep on a picture-perfect Saturday morning under sunny skies with the season winding down. Backed by a strong performance by the Prep starting pitcher and defense, it was the host Hoyas ultimately shutting down the Quaker offense and winning by a score of 5-0.
In another game that flew by in less than two hours thanks to two relatively equal defenses, each committing but a pair of errors, it was the Hoyas that capitalized on a two-out rally in the 3rd inning to crack open a close one, spoiling a good outing by Quaker starter Owen Liu-Bailey. Porter Speece would break out of a short slump, sending a ball to the wall in the top of the 4th inning for the game’s only extra-base hit from either team, but the visiting team couldn’t capitalize, leaving Speece stranded and going down in order in the fifth.
With chances winding down, the Prep defense would execute double plays in both the six and the seventh to limit the threat of a Quaker comeback.
Sunday offers a welcomed rest day before the season ends on Monday, at home against Potomac.
