The DCSAA semifinal matchup between Sidwell and Jackson-Reed was played over two days, with the game suspended after the end of the first inning due to lightening. The Friday portion of the game was rough for the Quakers. Starter Owen Liu-Bailey walked the leadoff batter; the second batter reached on a a bunt single; the third batter singled; and the fourth batter hit a comebacker to Liu-Bailey, who wasn't able to complete the throw to catcher Eli Berman for the forceout. A bit of chaos ensued, and Jackson-Reed was up 3-1 with the bases loaded and no outs. With the Tiger bench going bonkers, Liu-Bailey settled down and struck out three consecutive batters to limit the damage. The game was then suspended overnight.
Liu-Bailey dealt on the second day, holding Jackson-Reed to a single hit in innings two through five. He ended up throwing 106 pitches over two days in what was surely the season's gutsiest performance. He even tacked on a two-out RBI single in the fifth, after he was done pitching. It was an impressive effort and fun to watch.
The Quaker bats found life in the second half of the game. Leadoff hitter John McMurray finished his Sidwell career in fitting fashion, doubling in the fifth and tripling in the seventh. Porter Speece added a double in the seventh.
Unfortunately, the sum total of many good efforts wasn't quite enough. If you commit six errors against a good opponent like Jackson-Reed, it is going to be tough to win. The Quakers lost 3-1 on Friday and tied 3-3 on Saturday to drop the season's final game by a score of 4-6.
