DCSAA tournament, round #1
Game summary by Evan Tarr

The Quakers began the game with two quick outs, before a single by P Joey Romansky followed by a stolen base gave the Quakers an opportunity to take an early lead. An error by the center fielder on CF Justin Hurley’s fly ball brought Romansky home. Hurley then stole second and third and came home on a throwing error by Gonzaga’s catcher for an early 2-0 lead. A quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first established the tone for what would become a masterful pitching performance from Romansky, with a beautiful running catch by Tarr on a ball hit to no-man’s land between first base and RF Sam Mogilnicki. The Quakers went by quietly in the second and third innings and on the defensive side let in a run after Romansky clipped a batter with the bases loaded.

The Quakers tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Hurley singled, stole second, and then came home on SS Ben Steel’s perfect safety squeeze, which ended up being a bunt base hit. Unfortunately, Steel was stranded on third after two groundouts to shortstop and a fly-out to center. The Quakers broke out again in the top of the sixth inning with a single by Romansky, a walk to Hurley, and another single by Steel. Hurley scored on a whacky RBI fielder’s choice from 1B Liam Kirsch in which Romansky was forced out at home and the ball bounced off Kirsch’s helmet on the throw to first for the double play, allowing Hurley to advance home and Steel to make it to third. With runners on first and third, Goodman laid down a safety squeeze that scored Steel and advanced Kirsch to second. The inning ended with a line out to center field.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gonzaga threatened, following a leadoff triple with two singles to put runners on first and second with no outs and the tying run at the plate. However, Romansky wasn’t fazed and, in truly remarkable fashion, striking out the next three batters swinging, after having gone up 0-2 on each of them. The seventh inning was quiet for both teams, leaving the Quakers with an impressive 5-2 victory. The team will play the winner of St. Albans vs. St. Anselm’s in the semifinals of the DCSAA tournament on Sunday afternoon.
