The home team Quakers welcomed GDS down Wisconsin Avenue for a mid-week contest of two teams looking for a win under summery conditions. Similar to last year’s matchup, Sidwell showed promise early by quickly jumping out to a big lead, but unlike the 2021 game (which saw GDS nearly come all the way back from a 7-0 deficit to win), the Quakers, backed by a commanding performance on the mound by starter Lee Gillies, would ultimately shutout the Grasshoppers and end the game in five innings.
Gillies and the Quaker bats would turn nine hits into 10 runs, scoring from every position in the batting order (and twice from the #3 spot), with emphasis on contact made early in counts. Not all ball was small, however, as Sidwell would contribute three of the nine hits for extra bases, including two with two outs in the second, when starting first baseman Henry Walsh would double-in brother Billy, followed by a stand-up triple from lead-off batter Aidan Breslin. After running wild and plating three final runners in the 4th, reliever Alex Allamby would calmly end the game in his season debut on the mound with back-to-back strikeouts (after a narrowly missed 6-4-3 double play).
The Quakers will take a quick breather over the weekend, which will be welcomed ahead of the return to action with three homes games in five days.
