The Sidwell win streak snapped at seven games as the Quakers dropped a close one against the host Knights of Bishop O’Connell on Monday afternoon. In a game that finished in well under two hours, it was the mix of untimely errors from an improved Quaker defense and the lack of timely hits with runners in scoring position that spoiled a good outing from starter Owen Liu-Bailey.
Finding themselves down 2-1 in the second inning, it was right fielder Stephen Koopersmith lining a two-strike, two-out single into left, scoring first baseman Teddy Friedman to knot the score at 2-2. Unfortunately, in the bottom half, the Quakers would give the lead right back for good with the Knights battling a similar two-strike at-bat with a pair of hits after a leadoff base runner was allowed via error.
As the game progressed, Liu-Bailey continually exhibited great command, highlighted by a six-pitch 4th inning through the heart of the Knight lineup. After a few more quick innings, the Quakers would run out of outs, ending the game on a double play with the tying run on first base.
With the season winding down, Sidwell looks to fire up a new win streak on Wednesday at Flint Hill.
